October in your Garden

October in your Garden

October in your garden

"Fresh October brings the pheasant....then to gather nuts is pleasant"

October is a time for gathering in the last of the harvest. The daylight hours are dwindling and the night are becoming chilly. There are still plenty of jobs to complete in the veg garden.

The Kitchen Garden

Veg

  • Harvest your pumpkins, gourds and squashes before the frosty nights descend.
  • Gather the last of the runner beans and peas.
  • Parsnips may left in the ground for the moment.
  • Plant autumn onion sets now to ensure good crop for next year.
  • Apply a layer of well rotted farmyard manure to your rhubarb stools. Dig up and divide any older larger stools and reset with organic matter.
  • Continue to sow autumn garlic bulbs.
  • Check stored potatoes and onions and remove any rotting stock.

Herbs

  • Take some cuttings of hardwood herbs.
  • Cut bunches of herbs and dry off in your kitchen for overwinter use.

Greenhouse/Polytunnel

  • Start tidying greenhouse or polytunnel. If all crops have been harvested, consider washing down the walls.
  • Move any tender plants/cuttings inside from winter frosts.
  • Consider digging over soil and incorporate well-rotted farmyard manure

Fruit

  • Gather the remaining autumn fruiting raspberries.
  • Remove any netting on your fruit bushes and allow the birds to feed on any remaining berries.
  • Protect any potted strawberry plants from winter frosts.
  • Harvest any remaining apples and store in dark dry shed.
