September in your garden

"Warm September brings the fruit.....Sportsmen then begin to shoot"

September is a bountiful time in the veg garden when Mother Nature rewards our effort and patience with a wonderful array of goodies. This is a time for harvesting, preserving, freezing and tasting the delicious crops.

The Kitchen Garden

Veg

  • Continue to dig maincrop potatoes. If your soil is very wet, consider harvesting the remainder of the crop and store in a dry, dark area.
  • Harvest your onions and garlic, once the foliage has fallen over. Dry the crop in open sunshine and store in an airy place to prevent mildew.
  • Prepare a plot for autumn onions and add some well-rotted organic material, Plant sets towards end of the month. Try 'Troy'(white) or 'Electric' (red) for positive results.
  • Gather the last beans and peas and cut down the  remaining vegetation.
  • Continue to harvest peppers, ensuring liquid fertiliser is applied weekly.
  • Check your sweetcorn and savour the juicy cobs.

Herbs

  • Cut vigorous lovage to the ground and watch for fresh new growth within weeks.
  • Gather bunches of herbs and dry them in the kitchen for winter use.
  • Consider dividing large clumps of chives.
  • Trim back and clean parsley bed to ensure good overwintering.
  • Take some cuttings of mint, rosemary and sage now.

Greenhouse/Polytunnel

  • Continue to harvest sweet peppers.
  • Gather courgettes and  cucumbers before they get too big.
  • Feed tomato plants with a liquid fertiliser weekly. Remove bottom branches to allow sunlight reach fruit trusses. 
  • Move strawberry plants and allow to overwinter outdoors. Plant up some new runners.
